To Aru Majutsu no Index 18

I didn’t think that there were going to be any interesting stories done inside the Academy City but I guess there is always room for me to be surprised.  I guess I was wrong.  The pacing was good for this particular episode and although there weren’t any cool magical effects or anything it was nice to see that magic is still a reasonably big part of the action instead of just psychic power.  The kinds of magic that can be done are so much more varied – for one I never expected to see anything Aztec being used as a reference.  It was also nice to see that Index was playing a bigger role than simply biting Touma as she does every episode, although it’s still not a big role at all for a title character.

The thing that amused me the most about this episode was the kinds of conclusions that people come to.  First off, someone somehow finds out that Touma is in possession of the Index Librorum Prohibitorum and has befriended two of the Academy City’s Level 5’s, and then they believe that this string of coincidences means that he is gathering some sort of power bloc around him.  Touma, who barely understands his own life let alone the lives of others and doesn’t really care about anything.  The concept is laughable.  Even so, I still find it more weird that Necessarius isn’t sending any more agents to reclaim Index despite the way Stiyl and Kanzaki have defied the Church on so many occasions.

In any case, this episode wasn’t as bad as I was afraid it was going to be, and I’m pretty happy about that.  Or maybe the worst is yet to come – Accelerator and Last Order.  Well, we’ll see.  Loli Misaka might actually turn into an interesting character.  Oh and Biribiri wasn’t so bad in this episode – or at least, she doesn’t grate on my nerves so much.
